The Saint Marys City Council approved retaining the law firm Campbell Durant to provide legal services for the city's pension plans after the city received a single proposal in response to an April request for proposals.
City staff said the prior attorney handling pension matters, identified in the meeting as Attorney Randy Rhoades, notified the city of his retirement and recommended the Campbell Durant firm as a successor. Staff said the city publicly advertised the contract opportunity for the month of April and received only one proposal, from Campbell Durant, which the council approved.
Council members asked how often the firm would be used and how this compares with previous costs. Staff said pension legal services are used sparinglyfor matters such as benefit disputes, divorce-related benefit questions, or deaths that affect plan administrationand estimated use might be under 10 billable hours per year in typical circumstances.
A motion to approve Campbell Durant for pension legal services was made and seconded; the council voted in favor.
Staff said the arrangement is intended to ensure the city has an independent pension specialist available for rare but legally complex cases; the firm includes a pension division that handles these matters.
