Forest Park approves applying to Georgia Initiative for Community Housing; council to appoint housing team

The governing body voted to support staff in applying to the Georgia Initiative for Community Housing (GICH), a statewide program led by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, the Georgia Municipal Association and the University of Georgia that offers technical assistance and peer support to help localities develop housing strategies.
Staff explained the GICH program requires participating communities to assemble a housing team of roughly 10 members selected by the council and to commit to two planning retreats, mentoring and multi-year technical assistance. Staff described expected participant backgrounds (public housing, school system, regional planning authority, chamber of commerce, elected officials, planning and economic development, banking, building/real-estate, nonprofits such as Habitat for Humanity) and said a letter of intent is due by July 11 with a full application required by July 31.
Council members supported the application and asked staff to help the council select a housing team with the mix of industry and community representation specified by the program. Staff will prepare a resolution of support and assist in identifying candidate members for council approval.
