Campton Hills trustees award roadway contract; staff to add ADA ramp by change order, pavement work to begin

Campton Hills trustees voted unanimously at a special meeting to award a village roadway contract and authorized staff to proceed with related change orders to fix a contract quantity error and to add a short ADA sidewalk ramp at a school crossing.
The vote preserves time in the fall construction season, village staff said; a pre-construction meeting may be held late this week and work could begin as soon as next week. Staff also gave an update on the village's pavement-rejuvenation program and said crews will move onto several village streets and expect to finish those areas within days.
Village staff told trustees the bid in front of them included a typographical error in one of the quantities that inflated the contract amount. Staff said the actual contract should be about $60,000 less and that the difference will be handled with a change order. Staff also said they will add a short piece of ADA-compliant sidewalk and curb ramp in the Fox Mill subdivision by change order to create a safe crossing route for a child walking to Grama School.
Staff described the location chosen as the flattest and least invasive option to tie into existing sidewalk ramps and said the currently installed ramp in the subdivision does not meet current ADA slope standards. Officials said they selected a spot about half a block closer to the child's route, which shortens the route and avoids more extensive flatwork that would be less attractive to concrete contractors bidding small, isolated sidewalk segments.
Staff estimated the sidewalk change order would be below $10,000; speakers during the discussion referenced figures as low as $6,000 to $8,000. Trustees asked whether parents were consulted; staff replied they did not seek parental approval because the selected location is intended to be the flattest, safest, and most cost-effective option for the required curb ramp and sidewalk tie-ins.
Trustees also received a brief update on the pavement-rejuvenation work. Staff said a contractor that had been working on KDOT projects in the area will move to village roadways, starting on Volcom Road and expected to work there for three to five days before moving to the North Side, Norton Lakes and the Far West area. Staff said the contractor expects to complete the current village segments and have them swept up by about a week from now.
With no further discussion, the board conducted a roll-call vote approving the roadway award. Trustees recorded their votes in the affirmative and the motion passed.
Trustees and staff said they plan to address the reported contract quantity error through the contract change-order process and to bring the ADA curb-ramp cost proposal to the village once the contractor provides a sketch and price.
