Kerr County veterans services reported roughly $1.87 million in awards for the quarter and coordinated flood welfare checks

The Kerr County Veterans Service Advisory Committee reported quarterly results and described outreach during the July flooding at the Sept. 22 Commissioners Court meeting.
Gary Noller, speaking for the advisory committee, said the office’s retroactive award payments for the quarter totaled $718,000 and future monthly award commitments totaled $1,146,000, for a combined total of $1,867,000 for the reporting period. Noller noted that if quarterly figures continued at that level, the committee could expect annualized totals well above historical levels.
Noller said staff in the county veterans service office immediately shifted to flood response after the July 4 storm. He said the office staff spent the equivalent of 33½ staff-days making welfare-check calls to veterans in the county to determine needs and direct veteran‑centered relief resources. The court recognized county veterans-services staff Jenna (last name in report) and Chase for that work; the transcript records Jenna receiving a state award for excellence in service.
Noller and court members discussed outreach such as gift-card distribution to veterans over age 60 and efforts to coordinate with veterans organizations and relief agencies at the BT Wilson center during the emergency response.
The advisory committee’s quarterly report was accepted by the court unanimously on Sept. 22.
