Board staff said the project — temporarily called the Southern Elementary School project until a name is chosen — is part of the district’s long-range facilities plan to address capacity issues at Dixon Elementary School and Coastal Elementary School. The board was asked to authorize staff to negotiate terms with Pinnacle Architecture and, if negotiations are unsuccessful, to authorize alternating negotiations with SFL&A architects.
The request followed a request for qualifications (RFQ) process. Dr. Gartner told the board six architectural firms submitted complete packets; an architectural selection committee scored firms across six rubric categories and averaged those scores to determine the highest-rated firm. The selection committee included construction and facilities representatives and used that rubric to evaluate experience with instruction, HVAC, electrical, construction management, and other criteria.
A board member noted Pinnacle has been the district’s architect on the past four school projects; staff confirmed Pinnacle led those designs. The motion to select Pinnacle was made, seconded, and approved without a roll-call vote recorded in the public minutes. Staff said once reasonable terms and costs are negotiated, the architectural design contract will be presented to the board for consideration.
The board approved the agenda and consent agenda earlier in the meeting; those procedural approvals were announced as carried without a recorded roll-call tally.
The board’s action begins the contract negotiation phase; the contract and final guaranteed maximum price or fee structure will be presented to the board for formal approval when negotiations are complete.
