Board approves classroom equipment, HVAC evaluation and raises substitute pay; awards interpreter contract

The Wooster City Schools Board on Tuesday approved several operational contracts and purchases intended to address classroom conditions, facilities planning and staffing shortages.
The board authorized a purchase of new science classroom tables for Wooster High School from Martin Public Seating at a cost of $45,280. Superintendent Gabe Tudor said the tables will replace worn furniture that originated at the older high school; the vendor’s delivery date will be set after the purchase order is issued.
The board also approved a contract with Fanning‑Howey (Fanning Howie) to evaluate the high school’s HVAC systems, not to exceed $10,000. Tudor said the high school is roughly 30 years old and some HVAC units are approaching the end of their useful life; an architectural/engineering review is a first step to define options and costs for any future projects.
Separately, the board approved a contract with Tri‑County for interpretive services for a hearing‑impaired student (Star Messerly listed as the interpreter), a procedural move to manage staffing and funding where the student’s placement and funding arrangements required an alternate employment arrangement.
The board also approved revised substitute wage rates that increase pay about 10 percent across the board for classroom substitutes and other substitute categories (custodial/maintenance had been adjusted previously). The administration said increasing substitute pay is intended to improve recruitment and reduce reliance on in‑district staff covering multiple assignments.
Board members approved these items by roll call votes after motions to move and second each item. No board member voted against the measures.
