Zion police: fireworks citations will be enforced during July Fourth period

Zion’s police leadership told the city council on July 1 that officers will issue citations for illegal fireworks this Fourth of July period rather than issuing warnings.

The police presentation noted the city ordinance restricting certain fireworks has been in place for three years. The chief said excessive and professional‑grade fireworks during and after the COVID‑19 pandemic prompted the ordinance because such fireworks can disrupt neighborhoods, aggravate veterans with PTSD, distress pets and endanger property. The chief also cited a recent structure‑fire incident in a nearby community as an example of the fire risk posed by uncontrolled fireworks.

When asked what residents should do if they observe illegal fireworks, the chief said providing addresses and, when possible, photographs helps enforcement. "It helps if there's pictures or anything like that that can be taken, but if not, we can usually try to come here," the chief said.

Council members and staff encouraged residents to attend community‑organized Fourth of July events, cited the Park District’s planned celebration and urged safe use of public spaces. The council also reminded residents that city offices will be closed on July 4 and noted community events including an Esther’s Well dedication on July 12 and the next council meeting on July 15.

No new ordinance changes were proposed at the meeting; the remarks were delivered as departmental commentary and advisory information for residents.
