The Zion City Council read a resolution of commendation at its June 17 meeting honoring Officers Coggins, Pachowski and Jeffrey for their response to a person in crisis. The resolution, read into the record by the mayor, said the officers acted with professionalism and restraint after the subject began to draw a handgun; Officer Jeffrey placed his thumb behind the firearm’s trigger, secured the weapon and, with fellow officers, restrained the subject without injury to the subject, officers or the public.
The resolution text said the council commends Officers Coggins, Pachowski and Jeffrey for “exceptional service and commitment to the health, safety, and well-being of our community members” and stated that a copy of the resolution would be spread upon the minutes and presented to the officers. The mayor noted Officer Ty Hawkins was not present.
The fire chief told the council the body-worn or other video of the incident is available for review and said the interaction took about 30 seconds from initial contact to custody. Council members praised the officers’ training, calm and quick action and said the response likely saved a life.
The resolution was read and a copy was to be placed in the council minutes and presented to the officers, per the resolution text.
