Board approves multiple special events, street closures and schedule changes including Tiki on Main bike nights and concerts

The City of Evansville Board of Public Safety approved multiple special-event permits, date changes and road-closure requests at Wednesday's meeting, including extensions of recurring events and permits for concerts, festivals and community activities.
Highlights approved by the board:
- Tiki On Main: Todd Early of Tiki On Main requested an extension of the Monday "bike nights" through Sept. 29; the board approved the extension after noting no complaints had been received. Early said the events typically wind down by about 8:30 p.m. and are gone by 9 p.m., and that participants avoid parking on sidewalks. "They're doing all right. Wonderful," Early said.
- Tiki On Main concert street closure: The board approved a street closure for a John Pardi concert on Main Street between Fifth and Sixth streets on Saturday, July 26, from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., for pedestrian overflow at a concert event.
- New Hope Missionary Baptist Church: A previously approved church picnic that was canceled due to rain was resubmitted and approved for Saturday, July 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- FJ Wrights Instrumental Music Booster Club: The board approved a pending request for a band competition at Central High School on July 23, pending receipt of a valid certificate of insurance (COI). Staff said the event will not proceed without an acceptable COI.
- Evansville African American Museum (Baptist Town Festival): The board approved the festival's request to close one block on Lincoln Avenue and a short block on South Garvin Street for the annual festival with requested barricades.
- Bedford Collab grand opening (Impact Evansville): The board approved street closures for the grand opening event, which staff described as a community kitchen and fresh-produce resource for lower-income residents; the event is planned for Sept. 27.
- New Hope Baptist Church (Camp Hope): The board approved temporary street closures in the Bellemeade area for a children's camp July 30 through Aug. 1, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., to provide a safety buffer for children crossing streets.
Consent and other approvals included multiple road-closure permits (for crane work, water-main taps and construction access), a tree-removal closure on Walnut Street with an amended date window (moved to July 28—1 from the originally requested August dates), parking-permit approvals for utility work, a precious-metal dealer license approval for Rogers and Brooks Jewelers, and removal of a handicap parking space at 1907 N. Heidelbach Road at the request of the applicant's representative (the original applicant is deceased).
Board members and staff discussed logistics for a large tree removal on Walnut Street; contractors agreed to follow the Indiana MUTCD and maintain emergency access and resident driveway access. The contractor agreed to provide a detour plan and to coordinate with Curtis (special-events/permits staff).
All event and closure motions were approved by voice vote, with some approvals conditional on receiving required insurance or adherence to traffic-control standards.
Why it matters: The approvals allow a slate of community events, neighborhood improvements and essential contractor work to proceed; several items included conditions intended to protect pedestrian safety and emergency access.
What's next: Applicants will supply required insurance documents where noted and coordinate final dates and detour/traffic-control plans with city staff.
