Minnesota DNR proposes GPS-collar study of deer movement and predator impacts in prairie transition zones

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources presented a proposal on June 26 to study deer survival, movement and predator impacts in northern prairie and agricultural transition zones, including areas along Minnesota's western border where new CWD detections have appeared.
DNR deer and elk research scientist Tyler Ormiller described plans to use GPS collars on white-tailed deer of all age classes and on coyotes and wolves to identify wintering areas, movement corridors (including along the Red River valley), cause-specific mortality and survival rates across seasons and age cohorts. Ormiller said improved survival estimates are needed to input into the DNR—9s population and harvest-regulation models. "Deer survival estimates are outdated in these northern prairies and transition zones," he told commissioners.
