District enrollment at 1,696; K–3 class sizes meet district target of 20 or fewer

At the Sept. 9 School Town of Speedway Board of Trustees meeting, district staff presented the 2024–25 enrollment report, reporting 1,696 students currently enrolled—18 more than the August figure the district provided earlier.
District staff said the district currently operates 53 elementary sections (three fewer than last year). The report noted that all K–3 classes are at or below 20 students; of 34 K–3 sections, 30 have 18 or fewer students. Intermediate grades (4–6) include 18 sections, all with 25 or fewer students and 10 sections with 20 or fewer.
The junior high has 219 students—reported as the smallest junior high enrollment in recent memory because one grade level (seventh) has fewer than 100 students. The high school has 582 students, with class sizes noted as 140, 154, 154 and 134 for grades 9–12 respectively. Staff projected that, if trends hold, the high school could drop below 500 students in 4–5 years and below 450 in six years.
Staff said enrollment reported in September typically rises by the October report. Trustees thanked staff for work to maintain smaller class sizes, especially in K–3. No action was required.
