District construction update: new facilities near completion; Allison Elementary HVAC to go to bid Oct. 10

At the Sept. 9 meeting of the School Town of Speedway Board of Trustees, district construction staff provided a progress update on several active projects, including the new athletic complex, a maintenance building, junior high gym floor replacement, and upcoming HVAC work at Allison Elementary.
Project status: Project A (new athletic complex) is nearing completion; staff reported ribbon-cutting and several community events have already taken place at the new facility. Signage returned for rework and is scheduled for installation. The maintenance building near the library completed electrical work and is awaiting final inspection and a certificate of occupancy before occupancy begins.
Auxiliary gym and interior renovations: At the existing school, renovations include repurposing the most recent athletic area into public restrooms and converting the former aux gym into a weight room; concrete masonry unit (CMU) walls and rough-in plumbing work are in place. Contractors have set prefabricated walls and are installing steel trusses for the new gym roof; the team expects temporary heating in the new building by Oct. 31 to allow winter work to continue.
Junior high gym: The junior high gym floor was replaced down to the slab and is nearing completion. Staff reported the space is in useful condition and that PE classes used the gym; a junior high volleyball match is scheduled for the following day.
Allison Elementary HVAC: District engineer Woody Holm said the Allison Elementary HVAC system—original to the 1955–56 building—will undergo major replacement. Bid documents are roughly 95% complete; the district plans to advertise next week with a bid opening scheduled for Oct. 10. Holm said the design will provide measured fresh air per classroom and aims to complete major work in the 2026 construction window, acknowledging a tight schedule for long-lead components.
Other work: Staff said the district has addressed multiple smaller HVAC items across buildings—valves, pumps, motors and boilers—some wrapped into current construction contracts to avoid separate bids. No formal action was required on the update.
