Cherokee Nation human services says summer LIHEAP letters sent to elderly and disabled; clothing assistance deadline July 22

Jennifer Kirby, Human Services, told the Community Services Committee that summer LIHEAP letters have gone out to eligible households in the elderly and disabled category.
Kirby said the tribe primarily provides LIHEAP assistance in winter and that summer assistance depends on available leftover funding after the winter cycle. "As it is every year, we primarily provide the assistance in the winter. And then in the summer is always if funding allows," she said.
Kirby advised that summer assistance is most commonly applied to electric bills (cooling), while winter assistance covers heating sources such as propane, electric, natural gas or, in some cases, wood.
She also announced a clothing assistance deadline: applications must be submitted by July 22 at 5 p.m. and the application is on the portal. Kirby provided a helpline number for questions: (918) 453-5058, and said staff route callers who need help and maintain a spreadsheet to track application issues. She said applicants must upload proof of income and custody agreements where applicable; if there is no custody agreement, proof of household income is required.
Committee members had no further questions and thanked Kirby for the report.
