At the Sept. 9 School Town of Speedway Board of Trustees meeting, parks staff gave a report on the district’s partnership with the Town of Speedway parks department and summarized participation, costs, programming, and volunteer support for the summer parks program.
Presenter Miss Smith told trustees the parks–schools partnership supports recreation leagues, the West Indy Art and Music Festival, a summer swim lesson program, summer camps, a Meadowood Park story walk and multiple community events. She said participation tracking goes back to 2004; the chart in the packet is maintained by Mister Bennett.
Financials and subsidies: Smith said the school began subsidizing parks camps in 2015 after the parks department’s dedicated budget changed. Since then the district has subsidized up to $15,000 annually for summer camps and up to $7,000 for swim programming; Smith said the actual amounts each year have remained within those caps. Smith described several cost-control steps taken after the pandemic, including removing guaranteed giveaway items and making optional shirts parent-paid to avoid raising fees.
Programming and volunteers: Smith said some camps depend on staff availability (for example, robotics/STEM camps require a willing teacher). She described volunteer and fundraising partnerships—students earn volunteer hours, Music Boosters assist with parking to raise funds, and shelter rental fees are waived for school groups. Smith invited trustees and community members to a public safety and service community day the coming Thursday, co-sponsored with the police and fire departments.
Trustees thanked parks staff for program continuity and for supporting student opportunities. No action was required on the report.
