Mill Creek Education Foundation outlines scholarships, grants and pool scoreboard project

Chris Huber, representing the Mill Creek Education Foundation, briefed the Mill Creek Township School District board on the foundation’s recent grants, awards and fundraising plans and thanked district partners for support of student programs.
Huber told the board that the Erie Sports Commission awarded a grant to MEF to support a new McDowell High School pool video scoreboard. He noted the existing scoreboard is more than 30 years old and that the district has invested more than $1,300,000 in maintenance and upgrades to the pool facility since February 2019. Huber said the video scoreboard will “enhance the pool area for competitions, swim lessons, lifesaving training, and community events.”
MEF recognized its Hall of Flame inductees and scholarship recipients at recent events. Huber read names for the 2025 Hall of Flame: Richie Blatt, Ella Smith, Clara Gibson, Bridal O'Donnell, Sofia Mazzucco, Dominic Zito, Avery Jansy, Jacob Banowitz, Vinny Young, Quentin Orlando and Emma Kephart. MEF also recognized a Hall of Flame Impact Award recipient, McDowell teacher Rob Hodgson, and named Sparks awardees and nominees for eighth‑grade recognition. Huber described MEF’s first Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) gift through a special‑purpose entity and noted that donors in Pennsylvania may redirect state tax liability via the EITC program to support MEF initiatives; donors may also be able to claim a federal charitable deduction for the remaining contribution. He thanked Marquette Savings Bank (Mill Creek branch) for agreeing to collect supplies for district “caring closets” beginning in August and promoted MEF fundraising events, including a golf tournament at Whispering Woods Golf Club and a schoolhouse craft festival in December.
Why it matters
MEF grant awards and fundraising directly supply scholarships, student supports and program enhancements that the district does not fund through its operating budget. The scoreboard grant is intended to broaden the district’s ability to host events and improve student and community programming in the pool facility.
