District transportation reconfiguration avoids route cuts after staff reallocations

The Moorhead Area Public Schools administration told the school board on June 23 that planned phase‑2 transportation reductions were reworked and will not reduce general‑education routes for the coming year.
A staff presentation summarized earlier recommendations and the subsequent review. The district had proposed reducing contractor routes to save costs but administrators said they identified savings elsewhere—by reallocating an administrative position from the district office to the high school and by converting additional contractor routes to district‑run routes. The presentation noted the district’s internal fleet share increased from about 20% to about 30% of routes after conversions; administrators said they have reached near capacity for in‑house operations because of bus availability and spare‑bus needs.
The administration said the change avoids service impacts to students: “So with the new plan, we were able to convert more routes, and now we’ve increased our piece of the pie by to 30%,” the presenter said. Board members thanked staff for the work; the board heard that hiring and retention of bus drivers has improved, with five new drivers onboard for the summer, and overtime and logistics remain the main cost pressures.
Administrators said the district will continue to review contractor partnerships and route optimization, but currently has no planned reduction in routes affecting families.
