Washington County recognized Jen Sterner as the county’s 2025 family childcare provider of the year during the July 8 board meeting, Becky (Rebecca) Knighton, senior social worker in the Community Services licensing unit, said.
Knighton described the selection criteria — licensed at least three years, meeting state training requirements, demonstrating professional childcare skills and having a positive impact on children and families — and announced the award. "It is with great pride that today we recognize Jen Sterner as the 2025 Washington County childcare provider of the year," Knighton said.
Jen Sterner runs Sunrise Nature Preschool in Lake Elmo on roughly an acre backing to Lake Elmo Park Preserve. Knighton and parents who nominated Sterner cited an outdoor classroom and a curriculum built around children’s curiosity and nature exploration. One parent noted that their child "has just blossomed under her care," and another said "most of all, the kids have fun with Jen and enjoy learning."
Sterner told the board the recognition was "one of the greatest honors of my entire life" and thanked the county licensing team, volunteers and her family. Board members offered congratulations and emphasized the importance of high‑quality childcare for working families.
The board took no formal action on the recognition; staff arranged a photo with the provider and children following the remarks.
