Small Business Development Center seeks $1,000 in 2026 county appropriations; commissioners to consider during budgeting

Representatives of the Small Business Development Center visited the Pipestone County board on July 8 to describe services and request a $1,000 appropriation for the county’s 2026 budget.
Christine Fisher, regional director, told commissioners the SBDC provides one‑on‑one, confidential technical assistance to entrepreneurs and small businesses across an 18‑county region. Services include help with business plans, cash‑flow analysis, marketing and registration; the SBDC does not provide lending but helps prepare clients to seek financing.
“All of the services that we provide are at no cost,” Fisher said, adding that federal Small Business Administration funding requires local matching funds. The SBDC is based at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall and combines federal, state and local funds as well as grant support to run its regional operations.
The presenters asked commissioners to consider a $1,000 appropriation for 2026 to support SBDC services in Pipestone County. Commissioners said they would review the request as part of the county’s normal budget timetable.
No formal vote was taken. The board’s administrator confirmed the request would be considered during the budget development process.
