A parent urged the Boulder Valley School District board to publish a simple, public-facing AI policy before the school year begins. IT staff told trustees they are evaluating AI tools and conducting a district AI readiness assessment.
A parent and local teacher asked the Boulder Valley School District Board of Education on Aug. 12 to prioritize a concise, public-facing artificial intelligence policy that teachers, students and parents can understand and use.
The request and district staff responses are significant because generative AI and other tools are increasingly used by students and educators; clarity on acceptable uses and guardrails affects classroom practice and academic integrity.
During public participation, Michael Whitaker, a parent with children at Fairview and Southern Hills schools, said parents are behind on technology and urged a simple, widely shared set of rules. “Could you explain it to a teacher? Could you explain it to a student?” Whitaker asked. He said he drafted a one-page infographic to distill district policy and urged the board to make guidance visible to classrooms and families before the year proceeds.
Frank from IT told the board the department is taking a deliberate approach to AI. “We are evaluating the latest AI offerings from Google and continue to mature our approach to further AI adoption,” he said. IT staff reported producing an AI maturity assessment and gap analysis and said they would make rollout recommendations based on findings.
Board members supported a fuller discussion. Director Alex (last name given as board member in roll call) asked for an in-depth briefing on AI and broader technology strategy; Director Jason also endorsed a districtwide discussion of how to think about tools and classroom use.
The board did not adopt a formal AI policy at the meeting. Staff said they are preparing district guidance and that trustees will receive a more detailed presentation at a future meeting.
