North Platte board approves multiple policy updates, adopts athletic‑assignment and behavioral‑intervention policies

The North Platte Public Schools Board of Education on Aug. 11 approved a package of policy updates, revised its purchasing‑credit card program and adopted two new policies required by recent state legislation.
Board members said the purchases policy change will shift most district purchasing cards from individually issued cards to department-level cards and adds language authorizing occasional single‑day charges above $250 for items such as utility bills. Dr. Janelle McDonald, the district treasurer, told the board the district has been reducing the number of individual cards and moving to departmental cards to improve oversight.
"We will have no individual cards across the district with the exception of maybe an activities director card," Dr. McDonald said, describing a multi-step checkout and receipt-review process that will remain in place.
The board approved a set of attorney‑recommended revisions to a set of existing policies and adopted two new policies that were required by the recent legislative session. New policy 6044, “Participation and assignment of athletic teams,” defines which teams are designated male or female and says males cannot participate on teams designated for females; females may participate on male teams only when a female team is not offered. Dr. Rhodes said the policy implements state law passed this year.
The board also adopted new policy 6045, “Behavioral intervention,” which the administration said mirrors state requirements for staff training and end‑of‑year reporting. Dr. Rhodes told the board the district must provide training to teachers, paraprofessionals, nurses and counselors and report the type and dates of training through an ESU‑hosted website.

The packet that explains each legal change was available as an attachment to the board agenda, and trustees said the attachment remains accessible to the public.
The board president called the motions to a vote and recorded aye votes from all members present.
Looking ahead, the administration said the district will publish implementation guidance for building leaders and staff and will track required training and reporting schedules for the behavioral intervention policy.
