Board recognizes parent‑leadership graduates, five schools join Blue Zones program; FSBA presents award to board member

The Duval County School Board opened its July 1 meeting with multiple recognitions: graduation of the latest Parents Who Lead cohort, designation of five more Blue Zones‑approved schools and an award presentation from the Florida School Boards Association.
Superintendent and staff recognized the Parents Who Lead program — a partnership among Duval County Public Schools, the Jacksonville Public Education Fund and Kids Hope Alliance — and listed cohort 6 graduates by name, thanking facilitators and site coordinators. "Parents who lead empowers parents and caregivers to become transformative agents of change in schools and in the community," a staff presenter said.
The board also announced five additional schools were Blue Zones‑approved, a designation tied to community health and wellness initiatives. The newly designated schools are Maddie B. Rutherford Alternative Middle School; Jean Rebeau Middle School; Jean Rebeau High School; Northwestern Legends Elementary School; and Rutledge Pearson Elementary School. The district’s Administration Building has also been named a Blue Zones Project approved work site.
Tim Bryant, outgoing president of the Florida School Boards Association, traveled from Okaloosa County to present a president’s award to Board Member Daryl Willie for his work fostering civility and engagement across the statewide association. "When you get a whole bunch of elected people together and you can get them to sing and have a good time, it really changed the outcome of what the way our organization was going," Bryant said as he presented the award.
Board Chair and other members offered congratulations to the honorees. Kristen Murray, marketing and engagement lead for Blue Zones Project Jacksonville, joined the recognition. Staff said the Blue Zones schools adopt low‑ or no‑cost research‑based policies and programs designed to make healthy choices easier for students and staff.
No votes were required for the presentations.
