Choctaw High School community installs new totem pole replica at campus entrance

Choctaw High School alumni and community volunteers installed a new totem pole at the school entrance last week, the board heard during member announcements at the School Board of Okaloosa County workshop.
Board member Miss Vancic described the project as a multi‑year committee effort that began in May 2023 after the previous pole could not be retained during construction. The new 11‑foot pole is molded from poly resin, painted and sealed with a marine clear coat; the vendor, Icon Poly of Nebraska, produced the piece. Vancic said the design incorporates symbols of academic, arts and athletic traditions and aimed to tell the school’s story.
The project team included alumni artists and community members who provided design guidance, a paver fundraising component and coordination with district construction and operations staff. Vancic thanked district construction managers and the superintendent’s office for support and noted the modular, synthetic construction should provide long durability. "He said he had never seen such a reception at one of his projects," Vancic said of the Icon Poly representative, describing the turnout from alumni and community members for the installation.
Board members praised the committee’s work and encouraged community members to view the new totem pole on campus.
