Commissioners highlight senior focus groups, budget game night and upcoming community events

Several Osceola County commissioners used their time on the agenda to report outreach activity and upcoming community events, including senior focus groups, a countywide "What's Happening" event and public engagement efforts to explain the county budget.

Commissioner Booth said the senior community focus group at the St. Cloud Villas for District 5 had “a great turnout” and thanked staff for organizing the session. Commissioner Arrington highlighted a "What's Happening" event scheduled for July 24 at Valencia College on Pleasant Hill Road that will feature county departments, state and federal representatives and tables for residents to learn about local government programs. Arrington also encouraged residents to attend a District 3 senior focus group.

Commissioner Chaudhry described the county’s first "game night town hall," an exercise that teaches participants about the county budget by having residents and students decide how to spend limited funds. Chaudhry said attendees routinely identified library hours as the first item to cut in the simulation. She also reminded residents of a movie night set for July 18 at the Studio Grill in Margaritaville (registration required) and recapped attending the Florida Association of Counties annual conference.

Commissioners also noted ongoing Healthy Senior activities at the Guevara Center, listing recent bingo, "sit and be fit," and Soomba sessions and saying more events are scheduled.
