Recreation committee updates, park work and land-conservation milestone win praise from commissioners

At the June 24 meeting the Recreation and Open Space Advisory Committee (ROSCO) delivered its annual presentation describing park improvements, engagement and upcoming projects. Commissioners used the presentation to praise recent work and to approve a land-conservation purchase.
ROSCO highlights: Committee chair Steven Scott recapped recent projects: playground and parking improvements at Veterans Memorial Park; new restrooms at Santa Fe Lake Park; pavilion and pickleball projects at Cuscoilla and Jonesville Park upgrades; West End Park central upgrades in advance of the World Masters competition; and outreach including public engagement meetings and continued master-plan activity for West End Phase 2. Scott noted a 10-year staffing and amenity replacement plan under discussion.
Land conservation and acquisitions: Andy Christman, program manager for the county's Land Conservation Program, joined commissioners in marking the program's 25th anniversary and the agency's hundredth acquisition. During the meeting the board approved an option contract to acquire the Hawkins tract (Watermelon Pond) as part of the Alachua County Forever portfolio; commissioners congratulated staff on reaching the acquisition milestone.
Why it matters: ROSCO and the county's land-conservation work are closely tied to park access, outdoor recreation and long-term environmental protection. Commissioners said the work improves quality of life and thanked staff and volunteers for carrying projects from planning through construction.
Next steps: ROSCO plans continued engagement on West End and other master-plan projects, and staff will move forward with the option contract and other conservation priorities.
