Pensacola ARB approves exterior alterations at 121 South Palafox Street

The Pensacola Architectural Review Board on a voice vote approved final exterior alterations and associated rear-site improvements for 121 South Palafox Street in the Palafox Historic Business District.
The board approved a proposed new stucco system with tile accents, aluminum canopies on the front façade, shutters on the rear, new aluminum storefront systems for front and rear elevations, exterior lighting, and conceptual rear parking-lot elements including a trash enclosure, patio gate, planting beds, an electric vehicle charging station, a powder-coated aluminum fence and an entrance portal from Intendencia Street. Staff said the facade changes had received conceptual approval at the May 2025 ARB meeting and the current package provided additional details for the site elements.
Scott Dean, the applicant’s representative, said the design has been revised to address the board’s earlier suggestions. “The board suggested some changes to the facade that we had designed originally. So we’ve done that, and are coming back through to, hopefully, get that approved this time,” Dean said.
Board members who spoke during the item said the revised canopies and the rhythm of separate panels improved the facade’s articulation. One board member said the changes “break[] it up into a little more articulated, sections, that make some sense.” The board had no objections to the site plan package and approved the submittal as presented.
During the discussion a board member asked the applicant about a separate, later city proposal to reconfigure Palafox Street and possible elimination of on-street parking. Dean said he personally did not object to removal of on-street parking and noted he had a rear parking lot serving his building. “I personally don’t have a problem with it, but obviously I have a parking lot around my building,” he said.
Outcome: Motion to approve the application as submitted was moved and seconded; the board voted in favor and approved the project. The board record notes the package included the site plan materials presented at the meeting.
The approval completes final ARB review for the exterior and site elements submitted; any future work that differs from the approved drawings will require return to the ARB for review.
