Proclamations, police awards and civic advisory reports highlight Juneteenth week; Centennial committee outlines festival plans

Boys & Girls Club proclamation
The Commission adopted a proclamation recognizing National Boys & Girls Club Week (June 23–27) and specifically honored the Marty Huizinga Boys & Girls Club in Hollywood for serving several hundred members daily. Alyssa Arlequin, representing the club, told the Commission the Marty Huizinga club serves roughly 260–270 children a day with meals, homework help and enrichment programming.
Police Department awards
Acting Police Chief Steven Bolger presented officer awards for February–April and life‑saving commendations. Recipients included officers recognized for pro‑active patrol that led to arrests, investigative work that closed cases, and officers who applied tourniquets and first aid to save lives. Commissioners thanked the department for those public‑safety efforts.
Sister Cities Advisory Committee annual report
Floyd (Benjamin) Key presented the Sister Cities Advisory Committee’s 2024 annual report and goals for 2025. The committee reported renewed outreach to Hollywood’s sister cities (including communities in Albania, France, the Dominican Republic, Romania, Israel, Uruguay, Guatemala and Morocco) and proposed school and cultural exchanges, business partnerships via local chambers, and a possible 501(c)(3) to support fundraising.
Centennial Celebration Committee update
Andy Ruffner, vice chair of the Centennial Celebration Committee, presented an update on the city’s 100th‑anniversary programming. The group shared a year-long event calendar that includes a November Arts Park festival and a November 28 commemoration marking Hollywood’s incorporation. Parks & Recreation staff and committee members reported sponsorships and preliminary bookings for the festival; members discussed logistics including tents, bands, car shows, and partnerships with local service organizations.
Other advisory reports
John McMillan provided a brief annual report for the Art Selection Committee, listing recent accomplishments and a suggestion to explore a festival at Arts Park. The commission thanked the volunteer members of the advisory boards for their service.
