The Dade City Commission opened the meeting by swearing in two officers: Lorenzo Moreno, returning to the department and sworn in as a lieutenant, and Russell Pannell, sworn in as an officer.
Acting Chief Rob Tungate introduced both officers and summarized their backgrounds. Tungate said Lorenzo Moreno was born and raised in Dade City, served 19 years previously with the Dade City Police Department and is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran; Tungate described Moreno’s prior roles in patrol and investigations and listed instructor and investigative certifications Moreno holds. Tungate said Russell Pannell brings approximately 10 years of law-enforcement experience, paramedic certification, K-9 experience and prior work as an explosive and narcotics canine handler under contract with regional ports.
Tungate also told the commission the department expects a permanent chief to be sworn in at the next commission meeting, that four recruits are scheduled to begin an academy class on July 8, and that the department is receiving a greater number of certified applications than in the recent past.
The swearing-in was ceremonial; no formal policy or budget action accompanied the introductions.
