Residents raise complaints about city tree trimming, Chamber bathrooms, homeless enforcement and building-inspector credentials

Carolyn Parrish raised three issues. First, she asked for confirmation the people Mr. Barthel hired to perform inspections (named Cummings and Christiansen in her remarks) are properly licensed; Parrish said public records she checked show they are not yet licensed. Second, Parrish said she heard repeated complaints from downtown businesses that the Chamber of Commerce restrooms have not been cleaned; she asked staff to identify the cleaning contractor and frequency. Third, Parrish asked the police to enforce a recently enacted statute she cited as “statute 125,” saying she has observed threats, aggressive behavior, and panhandling in downtown businesses and that officers should not treat enforcement as discretionary.
Mayor Pro Tem Priton Woodard thanked the speakers and said staff would follow up. City Manager Marica Van Ervin said staff would reach out to residents and provide answers where possible. Police and code-enforcement staff were not asked to take formal new direction on enforcement in this meeting beyond the requests for follow-up and clarification.
Clarifying details: Keratinos presented photos; Parrish said she had copies of the statute she referenced and offered to provide them to staff. Parrish asked that inspectors’ licensing status be verified before they conduct inspections.
Next steps: Staff said they will investigate the tree-trimming incident, verify inspectors’ licensing status with state licensing authorities or county records, check the cleaning contract at the Chamber restrooms, and follow up with the residents who spoke.
