Commission approves city seal ordinance on first reading; selects Florida League of Cities voting delegate

Van Ervin told the commission the ordinance “provides protections under Florida state law” and said codifying the seal aligns with best practices.
Commission discussion was brief. City Attorney Kevin Bracken told the commission that, under the cited state statute referenced in staff’s memo, unauthorized use of the municipal seal could be a second-degree misdemeanor once the ordinance is effective. After a public-hearing period that drew no speakers, the commission approved the ordinance on a roll-call vote of 5-0.
On separate action, the commission voted 5-0 to name a voting delegate to the Florida League of Cities annual business session. The body selected Mayor Scott Black to cast the municipality’s official vote at the business meeting, where election of League leadership and adoption of resolutions will take place.
No other formal votes were recorded on ordinances or resolutions during the meeting. The planning-board appointment item was continued to a future agenda because the commissioner bringing the nomination did not have a name ready. The commission also set and adjusted city budget-workshop dates and agreed to further executive-process items by consensus; those scheduling items did not require a roll-call vote.
The ordinance will return to the commission for second reading and final action at a later meeting, per the statutory process for municipal ordinances in Florida.
