Commission moves to close enforcement loophole for resident-sticker parking; directs ordinance language for enforcement

The commission instructed the town attorney on July 16 to draft ordinance language to make resident-sticker parking zones enforceable by police, to clarify enforcement of no parking on the side-of-street restrictions and to address overnight parking limits.
Vice Mayor Don Barlow said the towns resident-only sticker program could not be enforced because the existing ordinance language referenced paid parking zones, not resident-sticker zones. Commissioners asked staff and counsel to prepare a single enforcement ordinance that covers resident and guest stickers, no-parking side-of-street provisions where streets are too narrow, and overnight parking prohibitions.
The commission amended the motion to explicitly include guest stickers so town-issued guest passes would be enforceable in the same way as resident stickers.
The measure passed unanimously. Town staff will prepare draft ordinance language for review and identify any other parking-related enforceability gaps for council consideration.
