Council issues proclamations recognizing Aphasia Awareness Day and Squirrel Hill Night Market season

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh City Council read and approved proclamations on June 24 recognizing Aphasia Awareness Day and the Squirrel Hill Night Market’s 10th anniversary season.
Aphasia Awareness Day
Council read language noting that “over 2,000,000 people in the United States live with aphasia,” a language disorder often caused by stroke or brain injury that affects speaking, reading, writing, comprehension and memory. The proclamation commended the Pittsburgh Aphasia Community Group for advocacy and support and declared June 24, 2025, to be Aphasia Awareness Day in the city of Pittsburgh.
Members of the Pittsburgh Aphasia Community and allied speech-language professionals joined the chamber to accept the proclamation and to speak briefly about aphasia and community supports. Carissa Kravitz, identified in the meeting as clinical director of the Pittsburgh Community Aphasia Center and a speech pathologist, introduced members of the group. Norma Ortega, a stroke survivor who said she had worked previously as a vice president in the mortgage industry, and Tina Harris, who said she had a stroke 11 years earlier, both addressed the council. Will Evans and Sarah Wallace, identified as University of Pittsburgh speech-language pathologists and faculty, thanked the council for recognizing the group’s work.
Squirrel Hill Night Market
Council also read and approved a proclamation recognizing the Squirrel Hill Night Markets and declaring Saturday, June 28, 2025, as Squirrel Hill Night Market Day. The proclamation credited Uncover Squirrel Hill and I Made It Market (hosts) for growing the event since 2015 and noted vendor and attendance figures recited in the reading.
Carrie Nardini of I Made It Market and an organizer identified as representing Uncover Squirrel Hill addressed the council about the markets’ role in supporting small artisans and local businesses and thanked public works, public safety and the parking authority for event support.
Procedure
Both proclamations were moved, seconded and approved by council during the meeting. Council then invited group members to the front for a photo and for brief remarks.
