Councilors flag Chestnut Street pedestrian hazards; DPW outlines paint collection, lead survey and train station repairs

Councilor Dursley told the Rome Common Council on July 23 that a resident at Rome Towers asked her to raise safety concerns about crossing Chestnut Street between James Street and Black River Boulevard. Dursley said the resident has mobility issues and has difficulty getting to physical therapy at Chestnut Commons because "there's no easy way to cross Chestnut Street." Dursley said the council will need to address pedestrian safety as truck traffic increases at that intersection and suggested coordination with state representatives for the Black River Boulevard segment, which she said is a state road.
In a committee report, Commissioner Giuliano (DPW) briefed councilors on several items. He said the city is still collecting data for a lead pipe survey and that the city has received many returns marked as bad address or bad name; the department asked councilors and residents to self‑report for family members to improve the sample size ahead of another reporting period due in October. Giuliano said the sample size is currently too small to use automated analysis techniques.
Giuliano also confirmed preparatory work at the train station is underway this month, including brick repair, roofing work, drainage repairs and platform painting. Separately, the DPW committee reported a paint collection program scheduled for Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; further details were to follow.
No formal council actions or funding commitments tied to the Chestnut Street crossing were recorded in the transcript; Dursley said she had asked the resident to contact state representatives about the Black River Boulevard intersection because of state ownership there.
