Commission hears report on Young Eagles fly-in; members discuss future open-house or airshow

Commissioners heard that the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) chapter held a Young Eagles event at the airport the prior Saturday. Staff said about 20 planes participated and 37 flights were donated to Young Eagles; roughly 50 additional children and observers attended. Staff said the airport’s East apron and other appearance improvements aided safety and gave a better visitor experience.
Commissioners also discussed the prospect of reviving a larger fly-in or open-house, including historic elements such as the Ford Tri-Motor that visited previously. Staff said the city historically assisted by donating funds while the EAA chapter organized and provided insurance at favorable rates; the last large event was in 2013. Commissioners suggested targeting 2026 for a potential event and staff said they would speak with the EAA chapter and report back.
