Harlingen receives Music Friendly Texas designation; city gives business and parks recognitions

The Harlingen City Commission accepted a Music Friendly Texas designation from the Texas Music Office and heard multiple recognitions and proclamations at Tuesday's meeting.
Jeanne Muscora, community relations and outreach specialist for the Texas Music Office, presented Harlingen as the state program's 87th Music Friendly Texas community and described the office's mission to support music-related economic development. Muscora said music-related businesses and education in Texas support roughly 196,000 permanent jobs and produce statewide economic activity measured in the billions. She urged venue owners and live-music event operators to attend a free seminar the Texas Music Office will host on July 17 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Hilton Garden Inn; the session will be recorded and posted to YouTube and Facebook for those who cannot attend.
The commission also presented a Mayor's Business of the Month recognition to Tito Resendiz of State Farm Insurance (two Harlingen locations) and a certificate of recognition to the Greater Chamber of Harlingen for first place in media excellence at the 2025 Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives Conference; Alondra Sanchez was acknowledged for her role in the chamber's media work.
Parks and Recreation: Mayor Norma Sepulveda proclaimed July 2025 as Parks and Recreation Month, citing the departmental work on athletics, aquatics and community programs. Danny Diaz, director of parks and recreation, accepted the proclamation and thanked staff for ongoing maintenance and programming through the summer heat.
Pet of the week: Harlingen Bridal Shelter staff presented "Nugget," a roughly 1-year-old basset hound turned into the shelter by his owners; staff said Nugget's neuter appointment was scheduled for the day after the meeting and encouraged interested adopters to visit 1106 Markowski or call the shelter at 216-5250. Staff also announced a microchip clinic Saturday from 9-11 a.m. and an adoptable-animals event at Tractor Supply in San Benito from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
