County approves $10,000 Trust Board grant for Townsend youth baseball with city letter required

Broadwater County commissioners approved a $10,000 Trust Board grant to Townsend Youth Baseball, contingent on receipt of a letter of support from the City of Townsend.
Steve McCullough, speaking for the Broadwater County Trust Board, told commissioners the board approved a $10,000 matching grant for improvements to local baseball fields. "They're putting in another 10 between labor and cash," McCullough said, and the project will fund field upgrades to serve an estimated 18 teams he said are now active.
McCullough described the Trust's origin and funding source: the board was established by federal legislation tied to Canyon Ferry Lake and was initially funded from proceeds of cabin-site sales on the north end of the lake. He said the board maintains a corpus and that Trust funds are restricted to recreation projects. "And I would just add because people have asked this often and I'm sure you get asked that. This is not tax money," McCullough said.
A commissioner noted the Trust Board's application checklist requires letters from landowners when a project is on land the applicant does not own and asked that a letter from the City of Townsend be included. The motion that passed approved the grant on the condition that the city's letter of support be provided to county staff; the motion carried by voice vote.
