Parks and Recreation staff provided a summary of current programs and upcoming events on July 17, reporting steady participation and several near-term community events.
Staff said the summer concert series at City Park runs Wednesdays through Aug. 6 (music 7–9 p.m.; free shuttle service 6–10 p.m.). The next concert dates were announced by title and staff noted relatively low shuttle use so far. Downtown Street Fest is scheduled for Saturday, July 26, from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Whittier Boulevard between Fourth and Montebello Boulevard; organizers expect similar attendance to last year and listed vendors and entertainment for the main stage.
On aquatics, staff said the George Henswell Aquatic Center programming continues through Aug. 30 with daily recreation swim (1–4 p.m.), lap swim, swim teams, water polo and aqua aerobics. Swim-lesson session 3 of 6 is underway and registration opens for future sessions; staff said most sessions are close to capacity.
The department reported that the summer food service program has received approval from the California Department of Education and began operations last month, running through Aug. 8. Staff said City Park has been the busiest site for the program to date and that final participation numbers will be reported after the program concludes.
Youth sports updates: staff reported 241 children participated in the recently concluded youth soccer season across 22 teams. Basketball registration shows 204 children signed up across 20 teams, and flag football registration opens July 22. Staff noted most programs are at or near capacity and described efforts to backfill vacancies from wait lists.
Staff also described financial-assistance opportunities: the recreation scholarship program (funded through Community Development Block Grant funds) provides 50% or 75% discounts for eligible Montebello resident families who submit income documentation; applications are available at the recreation office. In addition, staff said a separate grant-funded discount of up to $10,000 has provided reduced-cost swim lessons for new swimmers this summer.
Commissioners thanked department staff and highlighted July as Parks and Recreation Appreciation Month. Staff expressed appreciation for volunteers and department employees who support events and programming.
