Montebello Parks and Recreation Commission selects new chair and vice chair, appoints ad hoc committees

The Montebello Parks and Recreation Commission elected Commissioner Olloa chair and Commissioner Carlin vice chair during its July 17 meeting, and took roll-call votes to confirm membership for five standing ad hoc committees.
The votes followed the commission’s annual process for leadership selection, which the staff said is required by the municipal code. Vice Chairperson Lovano presided at the meeting while the chair position was vacant after a recent resignation.
At the meeting a commissioner nominated Commissioner Olloa for chair and commissioners voted unanimously to approve the nomination. Commissioners likewise nominated and approved Commissioner Carlin as vice chair.
The commission then took nominations and approved members for five ad hoc committees: arts and culture (Commissioners Jimenez and Carlin), golf (Chairperson Olloa and Commissioner Jimenez), programs (Commissioner Carlin), special events (Chairperson Olloa and Commissioner Jimenez) and sports (Commissioner Carlin and another commission member). Each committee nomination was accepted by the nominees and confirmed by roll-call vote.
Commissioners also approved the minutes from the May 15 meeting by motion and second; staff recorded the motion as approved.
No public comment was received on these administrative items. The commission moved rapidly through the slate of nominations after staff explained each committee’s role and responsibilities, including routine oversight items such as the utility box art program (arts and culture), golf-course revenue/expense updates (golf), programming guidance for recreation offerings (programs), coordination of special events, and oversight and liaison with youth sports organizations (sports).
Commissioners and staff emphasized that committee work is advisory to the Parks and Recreation Department and that final actions and contracts remain subject to city council or departmental approval where required.
The meeting adjourned after the commission completed the agenda.
