Valeria Fonseca, an intern with the City of Pharr Parks and Recreation, presented a mobile recycling-bin prototype at the July meeting. Fonseca said the unit is about 90% complete; staff are finalizing logos and a QR code that will link to a short story about the project. The bin is on wheels so it can be used at city events and will be stored by Parks and Recreation.
Fonseca said the project is wooden (plywood construction), mobile and intended for repeated use at public events; Parks staff said they hope to display it at the city's community-engagement open house and plan a ribbon cutting at that event. The presenter thanked Parks staff for mentorship and said she is available to collaborate on youth-focused recycling outreach going forward.
The board applauded the project and encouraged staff to include media coverage at the unveiling to highlight youth involvement in sustainability projects.
