Tempe School District board approves routine items, highlights back-to-school events and $60,000 in donations

The Tempe School District Governing Board on Wednesday approved the meeting agenda, modifications to minutes from June 25 and an executive-session minutes modification, and the consent agenda, then spent remaining time thanking donors and announcing back-to-school events.
The board president acknowledged corporate and community donations that supported new-staff orientation and school startup activities. "I'd like to thank Toyota Financial Services for their day shift backpacks, swag bags and STEM kits totaling more than $60,000," the presiding officer said. The president also thanked Landings Credit Union, Roman Realty and Homes for Heroes and TEEA for additional donations to support new-staff orientation.
Board members used a points-of-information segment to report on recent events and to remind families about start-of-year logistics. One board member described the new-teacher orientation as a highlight and thanked volunteers and sponsors for refreshments and raffle goodie bags. The board announced the district's back-to-school rally is scheduled for Friday, July 18, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. at Gammage Auditorium, 1200 S. Forest Ave., Tempe. "Meet the teacher" events are set for Monday, July 21, 2025: kindergarten–fifth-grade schools from 5 to 7 p.m.; K–8 schools from 3 to 6 p.m. The first day of school is Wednesday, July 23, 2025.
The presiding officer also relayed a public-health concern relayed by a pediatrician acquaintance: that nicotine poisonings among very young children have increased sharply. "Nicotine poisonings among our young kids, especially 6 years old and younger, is at an all time high — 763 percent higher with nicotine patches alone," the presiding officer said, and urged families to talk with children about vaping and nicotine products.
The meeting included standard procedural actions and closed after members moved to adjourn at approximately 7:07 p.m.
