Irma Diaz, Environmental Supervisor with Public Works, reported recycling and cleanup metrics at the July meeting. Diaz said the city collected 47.74 tons of recyclables (revenue $3,825.28) and 31.45 tons at the residential collection station (revenue $1,186.81). Staff reported 2,131 tires collected in the reporting period.
Diaz previewed an upcoming "Trash Bash" scheduled for July 26 at Jones Box Park from 8 a.m. to noon and summarized a recent Memorial Park cleanup that drew approximately 50 volunteers. Public Works said two roll-off containers were deployed and that heavy turnout had filled the roll-offs by mid-morning during the previous event; staff estimated that cleanup activities in one multi-hour event removed more than 800 tires.
Speakers and board members noted the public-safety and drainage benefits of removing tires from alleys and drainage channels, particularly before heavy rain seasons. Diaz said the department intends to host quarterly cleanups, coordinate with code officers to identify priority neighborhoods and continue public outreach about recycling and bulky-item procedures.
