Board approves sign package exception for Kenneth C. Griffin Cancer Research Building

The Miami Planning, Zoning and Appeals Board unanimously approved an exception to Miami 21 allowing a special sign package for the Kenneth C. Griffin Cancer Research Building at 1425 NW Tenth Avenue.
City staff presented the request as File ID 17717, explaining the building is a 12‑story medical office building and the applicant sought a special sign package with a total aggregate sign area that exceeds the Miami 21 limit by 159 square feet. Staff recommended approval with conditions, including compliance with lighting standards (signs limited to 0.3 foot candles above ambient light) and other building standards.
Ethan Wasserman, representing the University of Miami, said the signage is intended to identify the cancer research building from the highway and to integrate into the building’s architectural design. “The goal here is essentially to identify the building and not overwhelm the architecture,” he said.
After no public opposition, a motion to approve passed unanimously. The board recorded the decision as final and noted it is appealable to hearing boards within 15 days.
The approval allows the property owner to install the six signs described in the application (five wall signs and one monument sign) subject to the conditions recorded in the board’s resolution and subsequent building‑permit and sign permitting processes.
