Grimes County opens new annex offices; punch list continues and surplus furniture set for auction

Grimes County officials said July 16 that departments are continuing to move into the newly completed county annex and that facilities staff are working through a punch list while several support items remain under repair.
Rodney Floyd, Grimes County facilities director, told the Commissioners Court that most departments have moved or are moving and that warranty punch-list items are being tracked through the county's work-order system; his vendor (MBC) had completed eight of the first 12 tickets within an hour of submission, Floyd said. HVAC commissioning and programming were scheduled to start the next day so office temperature controls can be adjusted by individual offices. Fire alarms are operational and fiber was installed for improved connectivity.
Floyd said the adult probation office is scheduled to vacate its rented facility and complete inspections by Aug. 30, and that the county is addressing door access-control issues, drainage and standing water at the sign shop, and other maintenance tasks. He said crews will perform paint touch-ups and texture repairs the following day.
The court also considered a list of surplus items—primarily furniture and a damaged shredder from the district attorney's office—and authorized a 10-day auction. Facilities staff said the auction process typically runs two 10-day sales; because departments must vacate by Aug. 30, the court approved a single 10-day auction. If items receive no bids, the county may offer them to local municipalities or 501(c)(3) groups and then dispose of unsold items in accordance with practice and statute. The motion to declare the listed items surplus and proceed with auctioning was made by Commissioner Chad Mallett, seconded by Commissioner Philip Cox, and carried by the court.
Court members praised Floyd and the facilities committee for bringing the annex project in on time and under budget. The court did not set a resale price in public discussion; facilities staff said local entities had already expressed interest in viewing items before the auction.
Ending: County staff said they will finalize the auction schedule and handle post-auction donations or disposal per county policy; no sale dates were announced during the meeting.
