Regional planning commission updates metropolitan-area climate plan and outreach

Representatives from the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission reported on a federally funded effort to develop a regional climate action plan encompassing Milwaukee, Washington, Waukesha and Ozaukee counties.
Ben McKay, deputy director at SEWRPC, and Jennifer Sarnicki, deputy chief transportation planner, told the advisory board that an EPA-funded planning grant (approx. $1 million, non-competitive) helped produce a priority action plan submitted in February, and that the next deliverable is a comprehensive pollution-reduction plan due in December. The regional plan is informed by the city's climate and equity plan but extends the analysis to economy-wide measures including waste and industrial sectors, and will include emission targets and quantified benefits.
SEWRPC staff said they are conducting community outreach across the four counties, collecting input via a short survey on their website and attending local events to "meet people where they are." The commission said it sees the plan as a starting point for future implementation funding and for aligning goals among jurisdictions in the metropolitan area.
