Select Board authorizes town manager to sign multi-year rescue and fire contracts with Sumner and Hartford

The Buckfield Select Board on June 25 authorized the town manager to sign three-year contracts for rescue and fire services with the neighboring towns of Sumner and Hartford, authorizing stepped per-capita increases over the contract term.
Town Manager Azalea Cormier summarized the negotiated increases, saying Sumner’s rescue contract will rise $5 per capita annually (to $30 per capita this year, $35 next year, and $40 the following year) and Hartford’s fire contract will move to about $101.35 per capita this year with modest increases in subsequent years. Cormier said the increases reflect higher call volume in Sumner and an effort to align contributions across the three towns involved in Hartford’s coverage.
Board members discussed the pace of increases and whether they are adequate to reach a reasonable per-capita level over time. "The fact that they were willing to at least sign them is a positive move forward," a Select Board member said during discussion. After deliberation the board approved a motion authorizing the town manager to sign the rescue and fire contracts. Cormier said the contracts will be presented to voters at town meeting as required for multi-year agreements.
