SAFE Task Force director: agency served 217 survivors last year; invites council to Silent Witness ceremony

Jessie Barnes, director of the Uinta County SAFE Assault/Family Violence Task Force, spoke during public participation at the Evanston City Council meeting on July 22. Barnes thanked the council for approving the human services contract earlier in the meeting and described the agency’s work supporting survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, trafficking and elder abuse.
Barnes told the council the agency worked with 217 survivors during the last year — a figure she said includes children and extended family — and provided more than 2,000 services ranging from emergency housing and court advocacy to medical-advocacy and landlord assistance. She said SAFE conducted healthy-relationship presentations in local schools and served about 520 students through those programs last year.
Barnes described fundraising and awareness events planned for the fall, including a dueling-piano fundraiser and a softball tournament, and invited council members to a Silent Witness ceremony on Oct. 10 to honor people whose lives were lost to domestic violence; she said the ceremony will include a roll call of approximately 68 names.
Council members thanked Barnes, praised the organization’s outreach and one attendee, speaking as a survivor, commended SAFE for helping survivors reclaim agency and voice.
