Peak Ventures to display Union Pacific crane car under 10-year loan agreement

The Evanston City Council on July 22 approved a loan-and-display agreement (Resolution 25-42) with Peak Ventures LLC that will move a Union Pacific crane car (UP903124, built 1952) from city property to a display on Peak Ventures’ Union Road site for a 10-year period.
Rock O’Neil of the Community Development Department said the car entered city ownership in 1996 and has sat on city tracks for about 30 years. Representatives from Peak Ventures told the council they plan to integrate the crane car into the landscaping and frontage of a new commercial building, styling the first building after the roundhouse and placing the crane car near the road so passersby can view it.
Why this matters: The agreement transfers display responsibility to a private developer while preserving a local rail artifact in public view. Staff said the agreement includes restoration and signage plans; the developer will display and maintain the car under terms of the agreement.
Council members welcomed the plan and expressed appreciation for the private investment in restoring and showcasing the artifact. The resolution passed by voice vote; the executed agreement will be filed with city records.
