Summary
The Fridley Public Schools Board unanimously approved a new clerical master agreement covering building clerical staff, health assistants, media clerks and technology assistants after union stewards said the contract addresses pay and retention concerns.
The Fridley Public Schools Board unanimously approved a clerical master agreement during its July 15 business meeting, adopting the contract the superintendent and clerical-unit stewards described as a step toward competitive pay and improved staff retention.
The agreement, presented by district negotiators and clerical-unit co-steward Angela McShane, covers a range of support positions, including building administrative assistants, receptionists, health assistants, media center clerks, accounts payable and district technology assistants. "For the very first time I really feel like our voices are being heard and appreciated and supported," McShane told the board.
Superintendent Dr. Lewis, who introduced the item, said the agreement was reached through collaborative bargaining and stressed the importance of retaining staff. "When our staff are paid a wage that is competitive, our staff will choose to stay with us," she said. Board Vice Chair Anna made the motion to approve the agreement; Treasurer Jones seconded. The board voted by voice and the motion passed by unanimous consent.
Board members and negotiators noted the district and bargaining group prioritized fiscal health and tried to avoid retroactive pay obligations. McShane and others at the meeting described the bargaining group as reasonable and conscious of district finances. Dr. Lewis said the district aims to minimize back pay exposure and credited both sides for a collegial negotiating process.
The board did not provide line-item financial details in the meeting discussion. The agreement was listed on the consent agenda and approved as presented.
The board will incorporate the master agreement into district personnel administration and notify affected departments. The district did not specify a public release date for full contract terms during the meeting.
