Klamath County awards $137,777 guardrail contract for two deadly curves; ODOT grant will reimburse costs

Klamath County commissioners on July 15 awarded a $137,777 contract to Coral Construction Company to install guardrail on two county roads with prior fatal crashes: Sprague River Road at Pine Ridge Road and the 90‑degree corner on South Chiloquin Road above Highway 97.
Public works staff told the board the sites have a history of wintertime ice and vehicles going off steep slopes. "There have been fatalities at both of these locations in the past," the Public Works Director said. Commissioner Nichols, who said he has responded to crashes at the sites, called the work "a big public safety improvement."
The county received an All Roads Transportation Safety (ARTS) grant from the Oregon Department of Transportation that covers the project; the county will initially pay the contractor from road funds and receive full reimbursement once the project is completed. "This is a 100% reimbursement," staff member Jeremy said, explaining that the county must advance funds and will be reimbursed by ODOT.
The board first awarded the construction bid to Coral Construction as the low bidder; later the board approved a separate contract between Klamath County and Coral for the same projects and amount, with the fiscal impact recorded to the road operating budget.
Commissioner Minty moved to award the bid; Commissioner Nichols seconded. The board then voted to authorize the chair to sign the county’s contract with Coral Construction. Chair Minty recorded the motions as passed.
The county did not detail the project start date in the meeting; staff said permitting is complete and the work is part of the three‑year ARTS funding cycle under which the grant was awarded.
