Council hears Mid State Fair preview, proclaims Parks & Recreation month and accepts CALED award

Colleen Bojorquez, CEO of the California Mid State Fair, told the council on July 15 that the 2025 fair's theme is "Off to the Races" and that the event begins the day after the meeting. Bojorquez said the fair traditionally draws about 375,000 to 400,000 visitors and outlined highlights including discounted admission days (seniors' day on July 18; kids day on July 25), a junior livestock auction and headline entertainment.
Mayor John R Hammond read a proclamation declaring July 2025 as "Parks Make Life Better" month in Paso Robles. Linda (rec staff) and James (parks) accepted the proclamation and thanked park and recreation staff for volunteer programming and maintenance. Staff also presented certificates of recognition to Francisco Vasquez and Manuel Avella for using a fire extinguisher and coordinating with construction crews to control a fire near Sherwood Park on June 5, 2025.
Paul Sloan introduced Michelle Stevens of the California Association for Local Economic Development (CALED), who presented an Award of Merit for the city's five-year Economic Development Strategic Plan. Stevens said the plan distilled stakeholder input into five initiatives and 75 action items and was recognized in CALED's programs and promotions category.
Council members and members of the public thanked staff and volunteers for the fair and for parks programming successes. The donation of a van valued at $73,000 (consent agenda) was referenced as supporting the city's "Play on Wheels" recreation outreach program.
