Parent urges district to include exemption form reference in state immunization notice

During public comment, parent Mark Francis told the board he received a state-required immunization notice for incoming seventh-graders and asked why the letter did not mention the availability of an exemption form.
Francis read portions of the notice aloud and asked why an exemption option was not made explicit. He said parents in Troy have previously received the exemption form easily and asked that future notices include a line or link pointing to the exemption form. "Why is there no mention of an exemption form available?" Francis asked, adding that he believes in informed consent and that parents should be made aware of options.
District leaders responded that the letter is produced to meet a state requirement and that this was the first time the question had been raised at a board meeting. Board members asked staff to review the letter and the legal implications of including explicit language or a link to an exemption form. One board member said the district would "discuss it amongst ourselves and...look into the legalities of that" and follow up with Francis.
No policy changes were adopted during the meeting; board members recorded that they would investigate the request and report back.
